On Friday, March 21st, 2025, Worksmiths, specialist recruiters for jobs in Sustainability, in partnership with our three dedicated placement students, Hannah Cox, Jessica Barr and Nadia Hadi, hosted a free event at the University of Birmingham. This initiative aimed to guide students and recent graduates aspiring to build careers in Sustainability.
Insights from Esteemed Sustainability Professionals
The event commenced with an inspiring talk by Zoe Hurley, Head of Sustainability at the University of Birmingham. Zoe shared her career journey, emphasising the significance of resilience and continuous learning in the evolving field of Sustainability. She offered practical advice to emerging talents, highlighting the importance of seizing opportunities for Sustainability action in any job and joining professional networks.
Following Zoe, attendees engaged with Hershil Patel, Associate Director and Sustainability Lead for Government and Public Agencies at Arcadis, and Jaime Sullivan, Head of Sustainability at the Ministry of Justice, who joined the session online. Drawing from his professional experience, Hershil advised people should follow their passion, learn about other disciplines and build their soft skills – capabilities needed in Sustainability roles.
Jamie provided insights into the Ministry’s strategies for reducing environmental impact across its extensive estate, underscoring the role of policy and leadership in driving Sustainable practices.
Interactive Networking with Industry Experts
The latter part of the event was dedicated to networking, allowing attendees to connect with a diverse group of Sustainability professionals. From individuals in graduate schemes to seasoned experts, all speakers noted the enthusiasm and commitment of the next generation towards Sustainability careers. The event attracted over 50 participants from various academic disciplines, with 12 professionals sharing their insights and tips. The vibrant atmosphere facilitated meaningful conversations, leaving attendees inspired and with expanded professional networks.
Key Takeaways: Passion and Practical Experience
A recurring theme among the professionals’ narratives was the presence of a pivotal moment that steered them towards a career dedicated to the planet. These personal stories served as powerful reminders of the impact individual experiences can have on career choices. Additionally, speakers stressed the value of practical, hands-on experience. In early careers, employers, of course, won’t expect full-time work experience. However, demonstrating commitment through volunteer work, internships or projects can significantly enhance employability.
A Call to Action for Employers and Hiring Managers
Employers and hiring managers are encouraged to engage with the passionate and proactive emerging talent eager to contribute to Sustainability. Offering roles that provide purpose beyond profit is increasingly attractive to the next generation. Integrating Sustainability into various roles can enrich organisational culture and drive innovation.
We recommend offering short-term placements or project tasks, enabling emerging talents to gain the practical experience crucial for their professional development. For information and support in facilitating these opportunities, please contact Beate.
